The War of 1812

Even though this war actually confirmed the independence of the United States, the War of 1812 is a relatively forgotten war. It lasted over 2 years, but ended in a stalemate. The US tried to capture Canada, but to no avail. However, the British army was successfully stopped from capturing Baltimore and New Orleans. The victories that the American navy achieved over British vessels launched American Naval traditions.

Great lack of communication surrounded this war. Had there been telegraphic communications with Europe, this war could have been avoided. Great Britain was ready to appeal the very laws that were the chief cause of the fighting 2 days prior to war. Had there been further communication, the bloody battle days at New Orleans did not have to happen as the peace treaty had been signed 15 days previously.
